Baseball Behind every good catcher is a mom trying to take a photo of her kid with the ump in the way shirt plucked Babe Ruth out of 1927 and dropped him directly into the major leagues today, the Babe might be in for a shock. In Babe’s day, Walter Johnson was acknowledged to be the fastest pitcher, by far. Modern estimates put Johnson’s fastball at anywhere between 88 to 100 MPH. The fastest of the fastest at the time. Pretty much every team today has at least a pitcher or two and sometimes more who can throw in the high 90’s and sometimes break 100. Nevermind the lefty specialists, righty specialists, middle relievers and closers who can hit 100 mph. The slider, the split-finger fastball, the cutter, pitches that didn’t exist when he was playing. My mom dealt with the spitball for part of his career, which isn’t allowed anymore, but the array of pitches today is greater.
