Darmok & Jalad at Tanagra September 1991 shirt seems, was that it was hard to talk about the truth of statements made about things that did not exist. His solution, offered at the end of a semester of increasingly inane solutions, was rather neat, in that languages create, deploy, and eventually abandon metaphors. It was, he argued, why it was hard to directly translate idiom, and how we ended up with notions like Santa having nine tiny reindeer somehow being true despite the non-existence of Santa and his reindeer, as that relationship and number may have been metaphorical for something else it could be true about. More recently I’ve seen people suggest that, as a language, it’s very close to our current meme-culture, although I think it’s more like the older classical education culture whereby the upper classes of Great Britain were tied together with a common series of reference from classical antiquity.
