Did I ever tell you about the time I went backpacking through western Europe shirt happened to be watching a documentary last night on the Oklahoma City bombing? One of the recurring themes in it was of people going off to live alone Randy Weaver and his family decide to hole up on the top of a mountain in Idaho. It got me thinking, not for the first time, that part of the American character has been shaped by the sheer of the North American continent. I’ve visited the USA only once in my life, but I got to fly across the country, and drive from San Francisco to Reno, and I was struck by the sheer amount of wilderness in America. The United Kingdom, by contrast, doesn’t have any wilderness. Every square inch of it is owned by someone or something either private individuals, or a local council, or the National Trust. The Scottish Highlands look like the glorious untamed wild country.
