I don’t pretend to have great knowledge about the subject but it isn’t just companionship, it’s a partnership. Depending on the breed of dog it may have already been predisposed to rescue. I’ve seen a lot of videos of dogs dragging someone or another animal to safety. It’s just the way they are. My dogs have usually been small and while they have always been great alarm dogs, alerting me to possible trouble, they would probably not jump into water unless I were in danger. My current rescue of a whole 10 lbs did chase off a backyard intruder one night! The brave little dog ran right at the problem. I frantically called him back and locked the door while turning every light on in the place.
