So, you’d need that coupled with the fact that a slim percentage of people live close enough to have Mr. Fanny be their doctor, and you get a next-to-nothing chance. I admit that I have a real soft spot for Fanny Price, despite what is generally seen as the flaws of her personality. Was she excessively pliable, passive, deferent? She tended to doubt herself, her personal abilities and claims, almost compulsively. Was she prone to debilitating headaches and fatigue from even modest physical exertions? Undoubtedly, more so than any other female character in the book but perhaps the superlatively indolent Lady Bertram. Was she painfully timid and shy? It can’t be reasonably argued.
