You could try to claim that it’s just because animals in real life aren’t that expressive, but then you would be wrong. Lions don’t have faces as mobile as ours, but they can do things like lay their ears flat, wrinkle their noses, bare their teeth and that’s not even mentioning body language! It’s like they were so focused on making the remake look realistic that they just forgot to make it feel real. They could have at least had him flatten his ears and recoil away from Scar like in the second screenshot. Every scene had a color palette that suited the mood the Pride Lands were awash with golden sunlight during Mufasa’s reign, Scar’s lair during Be Prepared was a mix of shadows and unearthly green lights, and the jungle where Simba grew up was full of bold tropical tones.
