Rat bomb and cactus Not a hugger shirt

Rat bomb and cactus Not a hugger shirt have largen gnarly roots and a heavy trunk. Like this one, trying to get a hold on that not so fertile looking soil. Looks like a mighty oak tree, right? But it is some 25, maybe 30 feet high, has branches and forms a crown. A tree! But not an oak tree. Its name is Pachycereus, from Sonora, Mexico. That is an old-growth forest! A nearly pure stand of Pachycereus easily some 200, maybe 300 years old, Dolder than most regularly logged forests in temperate climates. So why do the Mexicans not grow nicer trees here? Despite this area is right at the coast, it gets barely 3 inches of rain per year! The only trees to grow here are these guys. Some shade tree, indeed! This Stenocereus is growing in central Sinaloa state, Mexico. In the U.S. they do not grow a trunk and are called Organ Pipe cactus.
