Then, as now, people were likely to encounter a wide variety of pronunciations but were inclined to write in a way that recorded whichever pronunciations were highest in prestige for their own time and place. These at the end of his name is the same possessive that we still use today, although now we always drop the vowel and pop in an apostrophe.
